High blood pressure

Diagnosis and supportive care

High blood pressure is a common disease in which blood flows through arteries at higher than normal pressures. Over time, consistently high blood pressure weakens and damages your blood vessels, which can lead to atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries,) congestive heart failure, kidney disease, and blindness.

Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. Pre-hypertension occurs when your blood pressure is consistently above 120 systolic and 80 diastolic. Pre-hypertension should be taken seriously because it can progress to Stage 1 and Stage 2 hypertension.

We use physical examination to diagnose you, and we run laboratory tests to rule out other conditions. Some patients already have a diagnosis, and we can quickly enter into a treatment plan. We address the special nutrition and exercise requirements related to your type of high blood pressure and its treatment. Our treatment goal is to lower and stabilize your blood pressure and reduce your risk for future health problems. Because many blood pressure medications deplete nutrients that must be replaced with food or supplementation, we monitor your dietary habits and laboratory values to determine your nutritional requirements over time.
