Metabolic syndrome

Prevention, diagnosis and treatment

Metabolic syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors that raises your risk for heart disease and other health problems. You may have metabolic syndrome if you are obese, have high blood pressure, high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol. Other risk factors for metabolic syndrome include raised plasma glucose or type 2 diabetes.

We use a combination of examination, laboratory and special studies to diagnose you and rule out other conditions. Some patients already have a diagnosis, and we can quickly enter into a treatment plan. We recommended weight reduction and increased physical activity for the majority of patients with metabolic syndrome, especially patients who have abdominal obesity or “an apple shape.” Excess fat in the stomach area is a greater risk factor for heart disease.

Our treatment goal is to lower your weight and body fat percentage with nutrition and exercise. Weight loss lowers serum cholesterol and triglycerides, raises HDL cholesterol, lowers blood pressure and blood glucose, and reduces insulin resistance. We periodically monitor your dietary and exercise habits, and your laboratory values to determine your treatment plan over time. Contact us to find out more.
