Obesity and overweight

Obesity means having excess body fat. Obesity is defined by three factors: your body mass index, or BMI, which is calculated from your height and weight; your waist circumference (measurement) and; your waist to hip ratio, which is the proportion between your waist measurement and hip measurement. If you are obese, you have a greater risk of diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, stroke, and some types of cancer. Obesity can cause sleep apnea and breathing problems, and can also cause problems during pregnancy or make it more difficult for a woman to become pregnant.

Overweight is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. We look at the amount of excess body fat you have, and where you tend to accumulate it, to determine your individual risk of additional health problems.

We use a combination of examination, laboratory and special studies to diagnose your health status and determine your body fat composition. We talk to you about what your numbers and your risk factors mean for you, and we help you choose therapeutic lifestyle changes to reach your healthy weight.
